Summer Outfit Repeating
What is your go to outfit formula?
What do you reach for over and over again?
How do you dress yourself when you’re in a style rut?
What is your go to outfit formula?
It can be life changing to have an outfit formula you can repeat each week. So, I took it one step further and asked a few Substackers what outfits they find themselves repeating. I also asked them why they kept coming back to this particular look or formula. And as always, if you connect with one of theese gals please go give them a follow or better yet subscribe to their work!
I’m curious, what’s your summer outfit formula?
Katelyn Cnossen — Comfy Tank + Button Down or Cardigan + Skort or Long Shorts + Athletic Sandals
Sometimes I’m making so many decisions throughout the day that I just don’t have the bandwidth to plan an outfit. Decision fatigue, sound familiar? So, this summer I’ve leaned in on an outfit formula I can repeat over and over again. It works perfectly and has not failed me. Why does it work?
Because it’s comfortable.
I feel confident in it.
It functions for my everyday life.
It’s in line with my personal style: dramatic, preppy, and sporty.
A typical day in my life looks a little like this when I’m not working. I take Papito on a walk, stop by the local coffee shop, and then head to the park. Obviously, my week is filled with so many other activities. Like drinks with the girls, lying in bed binge watching Bravo, pilates, and what not but for the most part there’s some consistency on what happens each weekend. Wow I’m sounding more and more basic by the minute.

I know this outfit formula will work for all three activities. If you’re into long shorts write now, may I point you in the direction of these two posts.
Madeline Rose Nachbar — Tank + Pull on Pant or Shorts + Sandal + Beaded Necklaces

For me, summer dressing is all about simplicity. If you saw me on any given day, chances are I’d be wearing one of two bottoms: pull-on pants—like my Clyque Kiras—or long shorts (if Agolde’s Indra shorts have no fans left, assume I’ve left this earth).
Up top, it’s almost always a tank—it’s been STEAMY in the Twin Cities, and sleeves are no longer my journey. I love a basic tank with an elevated neckline, like a halter or ‘90s-esque square spaghetti. I usually toss on my slouchy braided leather Mango tote (which fits both my life and my kids’ endless supply of snacks and random treasures), comfortable sandals, and a few beaded necklaces, and voilà: easy summer dressing.
I’m almost never without a light layer (blame the overzealous AC), so my Buck Mason linen rollneck or some type of beach sweater has lived tied around my shoulders, waist, or stuffed in my bag.
And finally, a PSA for my fellow members of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee: I’ve become a full-fledged CAKES nipple cover stan. They’re a tank-season necessity for the flat-chested set and somehow stay put through sweaty summer days without making a break for my waistline.
Angela Galvez — Linen Top + Relaxed Short + Flip Flops + Colorful Accessories
Summer in SF is not really a thing until September but I’m finally getting a taste of real summer weather in New England this week. My vibe is the same every year on this trip: relaxed, unfussy with some personality.
So, this is what I’m wearing on repeat: a relaxed, drawstring poplin short with a breezy cotton-linen top, a textured bag (raffia or beaded), and colorful gems on my neck, wrist, or ears. Oh, and the same flip-flops I’ve worn for over 4 years now.
Angela also wrote this piece that I found soooooooooooo helpful!
Marina Mofford — Oversized Shirt + Baggy Pants + Dressier Sandal
I’ve worn this out to dinner a bunch recently. This is not a playground fit, it’s very much a chase my toddler around an iconic New York restaurant fit, i.e. Lilia. I’m very petite and love all things oversized on my still very much postpartum body. I finally learned how to tuck in an oversized shirt properly and I don’t know how we ever wore skinny jeans because I’m a barrel jean gal for life.
I’m also finally adding some color into my very beige wardrobe, I’m very on board with the Kermit greens this summer. I realize heels are not the most practical these days but when everything else is baggy, a little heel makes me feel more feminine. The shirt is la ligne, pants are DL1961 and the shoes are old Schutz. Found some similar ones!
Elle Sundberg — Tank + Cardigan + Long Shorts + Delicate Accessories

I’ve been living in bermudas, tanks, and flips allllllll summer long. This outfit is practical for my day to day chasing around a toddler, but it also makes me feel like a #cool mom. Or at least cool-ish😂.
That, and it’s a look made up of all of my heavy hitters: the Doen Petra cardigan, Flore Flore Hillie tank, Agolde Indras, and Havaianas. Wearing all my favorite pieces at once makes me feel my most confident.
Tamara Cnossen — Boxy Tee + Pull on Pant + Ballet Flat + Gold Accessories
Right now, comfort is key for me. I am also in my baggier fit era. However, sometimes baggy and comfy can look sloppy but I want the outfit to feel elevated. So, I choose a structured boxy tee and a barrel pant to create dimension and shape. I then add a ballet flat and my everyday jewelry to add chicness to the final look. There ya go! You have the perfect summer outfit formula while also remaining comfortable.
Tag me in an outfit you repeat over and over! We always want more inspiration.
